Mural - EDUARDO KOBRA (Brazil), 2014

Sienkiewicza 18, Łódź 501 139 892
About Mural - EDUARDO KOBRA (Brazil), 2014

A colourful mural by renowned Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra on a building wall on Sienkiewicza Street. The 2014 work attracts attention with its rich colour palette and distinctive street art style.

At the corner of Sienkiewicza and Traugutta streets, opposite the Łódź Philharmonic Hall named after Arthur Rubinstein, Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra painted a portrait of the pianist in 2014, the person after whom this philharmonic hall is named.

Creation of the mural

The mural was created on 26 September 2014 as the thirty-second work in the Urban Forms Gallery programme. It covers a wall surface of approximately 600 square metres, making it one of the largest realizations of this project in Łódź. It was created in collaboration with the Mia100 kamienic [tenement houses] revitalization programme.

Portrait of Arthur Rubinstein

Kobra based his composition on a photograph of Arthur Rubinstein from 1950, in which the pianist has an amusing facial expression that contrasts with his serious reputation as a piano virtuoso. Rubinstein was born in Łódź and lived in a tenement house at Piotrkowska 78, and today his name is given to the Łódź philharmonic hall standing opposite the mural.

Eduardo Kobra's style

The artist is known for colourful, geometric portraits of famous figures painted on large-scale building walls. His works in a similar technique include portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein and the famous photograph of the kiss on V-J Day. The portrait of Rubinstein in Łódź follows this same recognizable style.

Proximity to the Philharmonic Hall

The location of the mural is no coincidence. The wall with Rubinstein's portrait stands opposite the building of the Łódź Philharmonic Hall, which bears the pianist's name, so the two places together form a clear tribute to this figure in the city's public space. When it was created, the mural was the thirty-second element of the Urban Forms Gallery programme, demonstrating the wide reach this street art project had already achieved in Łódź.
