A public theatre for children and teenagers running since 1945, with a repertoire from infant shows to teen productions and the S-PLOT festival.
Teatr Pinokio is a public cultural institution in Łódź specialising in theatre for children and young people, presenting performances for audiences from infants to teenagers. The theatre offers a repertoire based on various forms of theatrical convention, from visual theatre and poetic productions to puppet animation and entertainment forms, and participates in national and international festivals.
Teatr Pinokio began its artistic activity in May 1945, shortly after the end of the Second World War. From 1 January 1950, the institution received the status of State Theatre, which confirmed its significance for the theatrical movement in Łódź. Since then, the theatre has consistently developed its activity, becoming one of the more important theatrical centres for young audiences in Poland.
The theatre addresses its productions to audiences of all age groups. Performances are dedicated to the very young (infants aged 0–3), small children (3–6), pre-school and school children (6–12) and teenagers (12–16). This age diversity requires from the artistic team particular sensitivity and the ability to adapt theatrical forms to the perceptual needs of each group. The repertoire draws on a rich palette of forms: visual theatre, poetic productions, entertainment performances, movement theatre and puppet animation, which allows for deep audience engagement regardless of age and theatrical experience.
Teatr Pinokio has repeatedly participated in national and international festivals, winning recognition and awards. The theatre company carried out foreign tours, presenting Polish theatre in England, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Turkey. Cooperation with foreign theatres and international festivals is an important element of the institution's activity, enabling the exchange of artistic experience and promotion of Polish children's theatre on the international stage.
The theatre organises the S-PLOT International Festival of Performing Arts for Children and Young People, which presents contemporary theatrical works from various countries. The festival attracts audiences from across the region and provides a platform for theatre creators. Additionally, the theatre offers educational programmes, including Pinoteka workshops for individual participants and specialist group programmes prepared for schools, which enable children to become better acquainted with theatrical art and the creative process.
The theatre cares about accessibility for all visitors. The venue has appointed an accessibility coordinator who assists people with special needs in planning their visit. Performances are also available at various times, and the theatre box office opens before performances, facilitating ticket purchase and provision of information about the current repertoire.
