This pastel-coloured tram shelter on Piotrkowska, with a wavy stained-glass-style Art Nouveau roof, has become one of Łódź's most photographed spots.
Piotrkowska Centrum is a tram stop in the centre of Łódź, which the local community has named Stajnia Jednorożców (Unicorn Stables) because of its pastel-coloured, unconventional roof in the form of a wave pattern reminiscent of stained glass. The facility serves as an important interchange hub and has become one of the city's most popular locations for selfies.
The official name of the stop is Piotrkowska Centrum, but Łódź residents have adopted the informal name Stajnia Jednorożców. The shelter opened in 2015, creating a new tram station on Piotrkowska, the main shopping and cultural street of Łódź. The stop operates 24 hours a day, serving tram lines 1, 2, 11 and other transport routes along Piotrkowska.
The designer of the shelter is Jan Gałecki, who created a spacious, pastel-coloured structure with a characteristic wave-shaped roof. The design clearly draws on Art Nouveau style, which characterises Łódź as a whole, particularly the pre-war architecture of the residential buildings on Piotrkowska. The roof resembles stained glass – a combination of colour, light and geometry that catches the eye of nearly every passer-by. The structural columns emphasise Art Nouveau styling, and the coloured roof creates a recognisable visual identity for the stop.
Near the shelter, in 2019, a unicorn monument by Japanese artist Tomohiro Inaby appeared. The sculpture represents a unicorn in dynamic movement, giving an impression of dematerialisation and lightness. The monument provides an ideal complement to the shelter's architecture, making clear to tourists and residents why this place has gained the popular name Stajnia Jednorożców. The sculpture has become an icon of modern Łódź.
