About Stanisław Moniuszko Park

One of the oldest parks in Łódź, laid out in 1875 by Łódź Fabryczna station as a green space for travellers, with a 1963 monument to Moniuszko.

Stanisław Moniuszko Park lies in Śródmieście (city centre), Łódź, close to Łódź Fabryczna railway station, between Składowa, Kilińskiego, Narutowicza and Polskiej Organizacji Wojskowej streets. It is one of the oldest city parks in Łódź, established in the 19th century as a green space for travellers arriving by rail.

Park history

The park was created in 1875 as Park Kolejowy (Railway Park), a green space for passengers of Łódź Fabryczna station, built in 1868. It was designed by architect Hilary Majewski, creator of many Łódź industrial-era projects. The park is the second oldest in the city, after Park Źródliska established in 1840. A later rebuilding or extension of the park, associated with architect Teodor Chrząński's design from 1904–1910, may have altered its layout in subsequent decades.

Area

The park covers 2.36 hectares. A figure of 1.8 hectares is also sometimes cited, likely referring to the green space alone without pathways and adjoining squares, or to the state before the park's expansion during modernisation.

Moniuszko monument

The bust of Stanisław Moniuszko, the park's patron, was erected in 1963. The sculptors were Elwira and Jerzy Mazurczykowie. In 1970, at residents' request, the monument was turned to face Narutowicza Street.

Modernisation 2019–2020

The park underwent comprehensive modernisation in 2019–2020. As part of this work, the area was expanded by approximately 600 square metres following demolition of an adjoining building. Works included renewal of pathways and park greenery around Łódź Fabryczna station, which itself underwent renovation during this period.

Park boundaries

The park is bordered by four streets: Składowa, Kilińskiego, Narutowicza and Polskiej Organizacji Wojskowej.
