A square in central Tomaszów Mazowiecki, named in 2015, commemorates the marriage of poet Julian Tuwim to Stefania Marchew, who came from the town.
Stefania and Julian Tuwim Square lies in the centre of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, between Wschodnia, Krzyżowa, Piekarska and Grunwaldzka streets. It was named in 2015 in honour of a married couple in which the wife came from Tomaszów, and the husband was one of the most distinguished Polish poets of the twentieth century.
Stefania Marchew came from Tomaszów Mazowiecki. She met Julian Tuwim in 1912 in Łódź, where, as local tradition has it, he fell in love with her at first sight. A few years later, on 30 April 1919, the couple married in the Reformist Synagogue in Łódź. For Tomaszów Mazowiecki, it is precisely the poet's wife's origins that are the main reason why the Tuwim name appears in the city's public space.
Stefania was also a source of inspiration for Tuwim in his creative work. One of his well-known love poems, Przy okrągłym stole, was written with her in mind. This is one of the reasons why the city decided to commemorate their relationship with a separate place in public space, rather than limit itself to commemorating the poet alone, as happens in many other cities connected with his biography.
The park has borne the names of both spouses since 2015 and lies in the block bounded by Wschodnia, Krzyżowa, Piekarska and Grunwaldzka streets, in the central part of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. It is accessible year-round, free of charge and without opening hours, like most city squares. The location itself in such a central point of the city means it is easy to come across it during an ordinary walk around Tomaszów.
