Teatr Powszechny w Łodzi

Teatr Powszechny at ulica Legionów 21 is one of Łódź's older drama theatres, operating continuously since 1945. Today it has two stages and remains under the artistic direction of Ewa Pilawska.

Since when the theatre has operated

Teatr Powszechny began operations in May 1945 under the direction of Mieczysław Stawski, in the first months after the end of the war in Łódź. Since then the stage at Legionów has functioned without interruption as one of the city's cultural institutions.

Who leads the theatre

Since 13 October 1995, the artistic director has been Ewa Pilawska. She is also the creator and artistic director of the International Festival of Pleasant and Unpleasant Arts, organised by the theatre.

Two stages of the theatre

Teatr Powszechny performs on two stages: the main one, operating since 1945, and a smaller one, opened in 2012. This arrangement allows for concurrent programming for large audiences and intimate performances.

Recognition and awards

In 2020 the theatre received the Silver Honour Medal for Culture Gloria Artis, one of Poland's most important distinctions awarded to cultural institutions. The stage at Legionów is also neighbour to a smaller, intimate stage known as Studio Teatralne Słup, so both are worth combining in one theatre evening.
