A former factory owner's private garden by Plac Wolności, now a park with ponds and Zduńska Wola's oldest lime tree after a 2015-2018 renovation.
Park Ratuszowy covers almost 9 hectares of green space at plac Wolności, in the very centre of Zduńska Wola. It was established at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a private garden and, after comprehensive renovation in 2015–2018, became one of the city's main recreational spaces, with ponds, paths and a notable stand of trees.
The park grounds originally belonged to Zenon Anstadt, the owner of the adjoining brewery. Anstadt established a private garden here at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and in time opened it to the residents of Zduńska Wola, initiating its function as publicly accessible green space. His name is borne today by Skwer Zenona Anstadta in another part of the city, recalling the same industrial history tied to the development of the local brewing industry.
The park's oldest tree, and also the oldest tree in Zduńska Wola, is a small-leaved linden with a girth approaching six metres, listed as a nature monument. Local legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte rested under this tree during his campaign against Russia.
In 2015–2018 the park underwent comprehensive reconstruction, financed by European Union funds and by the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Łódź. The works included reconstruction of the ponds with water treatment installation, reconstruction of bridges and walking paths, installation of street furniture and a public toilet, and planting of 165 deciduous trees and 25 coniferous trees. As a result, the park, which originally developed as one family's private garden, today has infrastructure suited to a contemporary, publicly accessible urban space.
