A monument in Wieluń honours cavalry captain Witold Pilecki, a Home Army soldier and Auschwitz prisoner.
The monument in Wieluń commemorates Rotmistrz Witold Pilecki, an officer of the Polish Army and the Home Army, who voluntarily allowed himself to be imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp to gather information about German crimes. He was executed in Mokotów prison in 1948.
Witold Pilecki is one of the most recognisable figures of Polish resistance during the Second World War, and monuments bearing his name have been erected in many Polish cities as an expression of remembrance for the victims of war and the communist system.
The monument is adjacent to Park Miejski imienia Rotmistrza Pileckiego, and nearby is also Muzeum Ziemi Wieluńskiej, so it is easy to combine a visit with a short walk through this part of Wieluń.
