Łódź is sometimes called the city of film, mainly thanks to the famous Film School (Filmówka), which has trained generations of directors, cinematographers and actors from all over Poland. This causes some confusion, though: many creators associated with the city studied here for only a few years but were born elsewhere. The current programme of theatres and cultural events in the city can be checked on the list of events. This article brings together actors who were actually born in Łódź - not just trained their craft here.

Piotr Fronczewski - Mr. Kleks from Bałuty (a district of Łódź)

Piotr Fronczewski was born on 8 June 1946 in Łódź. He made his screen debut at the age of twelve, in Stanisław Różewicz's film "Wolne miasto" (Free City). However, he did not complete his acting studies in his home city, but at the Warsaw PWST academy, in 1968. He has played nearly 120 film and television roles, and enormous popularity came to him through the title role of Mr. Kleks in Krzysztof Gradowski's film series based on the books by Jan Brzechwa. Critics today place him alongside Wojciech Pszoniak and Andrzej Seweryn as one of the most outstanding dramatic actors of his generation.

Marek Włodarczyk - from Łódź to Germany and back

Marek Włodarczyk was born on 6 October 1954 in Łódź, and it was here, in 1977, that he completed his acting studies at the local Film School. By 1981, however, he was already in Germany, where over more than two decades he played nearly a hundred film and television roles. He returned to Poland in 2004 and quickly gained recognition thanks to the role of Commissioner Zawada in the series "Kryminalni" (Criminal Investigators). He also played supporting roles in "Klan", one of the longest-running Polish television series.

Wojciech Zieliński - the face of new Polish cinema

Wojciech Zieliński was born on 23 April 1979 in Łódź and in 2004 graduated from the acting department of the local Film School, winning the Grand Prix of the Theatre Schools Festival in Łódź for his diploma roles. Since 2005 he has been an actor at Teatr Studio in Warsaw. His first major film role came in Sławomir Fabicki's "Z odzysku" (Retrieval), and for his role in the film "Chrzest" (Baptism) he received a Golden Lion and an award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. Audiences also know him from "Odwróceni", "Chyłka", "Wołyń" and "Furioza".

Agnieszka Więdłocha - an actress from the Łódź theatre

Agnieszka Więdłocha was born on 12 January 1986 in Łódź and, like Zieliński, is a graduate of the Łódź Film School (class of 2009). She regularly performs at the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Łódź, where for her role in the 2009/2010 season she received the Golden Mask theatre award. Wider audiences know her from the role of Lena Sajkowska in the series "Czas honoru" (Days of Honor) and from the title role in the "Planeta Singli" (Planet Single) film trilogy.

Dobromir Dymecki - the youngest generation

Dobromir Dymecki was born on 3 October 1985 in Łódź. He belongs to the younger generation of Polish actors, recognisable from roles in the film "Kos", the series "1670", and the popular production "Barwy szczęścia" (Colours of Happiness). His career shows that Łódź still keeps producing actors who gain nationwide recognition.

Where the confusion over "Łódź" actors comes from

It is worth remembering that some of the names circulating in online lists of "famous people from Łódź" do not actually refer to people born in the city itself, but to the wider Łódź region, or only to graduates of the local film school. A good example is Andrzej Seweryn, honoured with a star on the Walk of Fame on Piotrkowska (Łódź's main street) and an honorary citizen of Łódź, even though he was born in Germany. Similarly, Cezary Pazura, associated with the city through his studies at the local Film School, was born in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. This does not diminish their connection with Łódź, but it is worth distinguishing "born in Łódź" from "associated with Łódź" - which is why this article focuses solely on actors whose place of birth is clearly confirmed.

In practice: how to explore Łódź's acting world

More portraits of people from Łódź can be found in other articles of the "Poznaj Łódź" (Discover Łódź) series. The best starting point for your own "walk in the footsteps of actors" is Piotrkowska with its Walk of Fame, where dozens of creators associated with the city have left their handprints, and the Jaracz Theatre, where the playbill may still feature actors who continue to perform on stage in Łódź. It is also worth checking the open days of the Łódź Film School, if they happen to be held - a chance to see the place where many of the actors mentioned here began their professional path.
