About Municipal Public Library named after Adam Próchnik in Piotrków Trybunalski

The city's largest library, running since 1923, now occupies the Mediateka 800-lecia building with the SOWA robotics workshop and the PIKSEL screening room.

The Municipal Public Library named after Adam Próchnik in Piotrków Trybunalski is the largest public library in the city, operating since 1923. It is currently housed in the Mediatheque 800-lecia [800th anniversary] on ulica Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej, a building combining traditional book collections with educational and technological space. Besides its main seat, the library operates a branch on ulica Bełzacka.

From the old synagogue to Mediatheque 800-lecia

For many years, the library was housed in the building of the former Great Synagogue on ulica Jerozolimska, built in 1791-1793. After the Second World War, the synagogue was rebuilt and converted for use by the library. The institution operated there for decades before moving to the new Mediatheque 800-lecia building. The former seat on Jerozolimska is now occupied by the State Archive.

Patron: Adam Próchnik

In 1988, on the sixty-fifth anniversary of its foundation, the library was named after Adam Próchnik. He lived from 1892 to 1942 and was a pedagogue, politician and historian. In Piotrków Trybunalski he served as a city councillor in 1919-1925, and subsequently as chairman of the city council in 1925-1931.

SOWA workshop and PIKSEL hall

The Mediatheque 800-lecia houses the SOWA workshop, a zone for discovery and activity, which opened in September 2021 jointly with the Copernicus Science Centre. The library runs robotics and programming classes for children and young people there. The building also contains the PIKSEL film projection hall, used for screenings and cultural events.

Classes, competitions and meetings

The library organises library lessons, exhibitions and educational classes during holidays. It runs literary, recitation and theatre-art competitions aimed primarily at children and young people. It also invites visitors to meetings with authors, writers and actors, and to concerts held in the PIKSEL hall.

Branch on ulica Bełzacka

In addition to its main seat, the library operates Branch No. 1 on ulica Bełzacka 66. The branch operates independently from the main building and provides access to book collections closer to another part of the city.
