This former arsenal by the Baszta Opacka tower in the Cistercian abbey once served as a guardhouse and has housed a school since 1922, so its interior is closed to visitors.
A former armoury adjoined to the eastern Baszta Opacka [Abbot's Tower], one of the buildings in the defensive complex of the Cistercian abbey in Sulejów. The Arsenał was built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries in the southern part of the complex, and its construction is linked to the rule of abbot Stanisław Ostrowski, though some accounts also point to his predecessor in this context.
The building served as a guardhouse for the abbey's armed garrison, watching over the fortified complex from the walls. Over time it also began to serve as quarters for servants and guests received by the abbot, gradually losing its purely military character.
The Arsenał adjoins the Baszta Opacka, a quadrilateral, late Gothic tower from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, built with stone at its base and brick higher up. Both objects are linked by a shared passage, making them a single, compact section of the monastery's defensive perimeter.
Since 1922, a school has been housed in the former arsenal, an educational establishment operating in a building with several centuries of history. The object therefore remains active and in daily use, unlike the nearby abbot's palace, preserved only as a permanent ruin.
