A historic Dominican monastery in Łęczyca that bears witness to the city's medieval past. Worth visiting to see the architecture and learn about the history of the religious order that operated in the region.
The Former Dominican Monastery in Łęczyca is a complex of a historic church and monastery whose origins date back to the 13th century. The first Dominicans in Łęczyca were recorded in the 1270s, and around 1341 a brick church dedicated to Saint Dominic and a two-storey monastery were built against the city's defensive walls. After over 450 years of serving a religious function, the building underwent radical transformation.
The monastery complex was expanded intensively in the 17th and 18th centuries, with new wings added and interiors enlarged. In 1799 Prussian authorities decided to close the monastery, and just two years later, in 1801, the building was adapted as a prison. During this conversion the original church was demolished and new storeys were built for prison purposes. Many prison rooms were added using prison architecture, changing the character and function of the entire complex.
The building functioned as a prison for over two hundred years, until 2006 when the penal institution was closed. For many decades the prison was regarded as one of the harshest in the country, where the most serious offenders served their sentences. Its walls, bars and abandoned cells contain a dark history that is now presented in educational form.
The complex is registered in the monuments register under number 81-V-5 (entries from 15 May 1946 and 13 March 1961). After the prison closed, the building's interiors were gradually opened to visitors. The former presbytery serves as a meeting room, and two exhibitions show historical prison furnishings, including bars and inscriptions left by prisoners. Every visible detail tells the story of people who lived within these walls.
