A Neo-Renaissance corner building from 1880-1890, known for serving as the fictional Kramer Bank in Juliusz Machulski's film Vabank.
The Złoty Róg Townhouse stands at the corner of ulica Sieradzka and plac Kościuszki in Piotrków Trybunalski, in the heart of the Old Town. This Neo-Renaissance building is entered in the heritage register and is known throughout Poland for the role it played in the cult film "Vabank".
The present building was erected between 1880 and 1890 as a corner building closing the intersection of ulica Sieradzka and plac Kościuszki. It was built on the site of two older, eighteenth-century townhouses that belonged to Jan Przyłuski, the last starosta (administrator) of Piotrków. The western elevation has retained a symmetrical arrangement of ornaments and architectural details despite numerous renovations to which the building was subjected over successive decades.
The Złoty Róg Townhouse served in 1981 as the seat of the fictional Kramer Bank in Juliusz Machulski's film "Vabank". This shot made the building instantly recognisable far beyond Piotrków. A reminder of the film scene is the bench of Kwinta from the film "Vabank" standing just beside it.
Ulica Sieradzka, on which the townhouse stands, is one of the oldest streets in the city, about 140 metres long, and runs from plac Trybunalski to plac Kościuszki as part of the medieval urban layout of the Old Town, dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It also appeared in other Polish films, including "Life Once More" and "Holy War", both from 1965.
The building currently serves mainly as a residential building, supplemented by retail and service outlets on the ground floor. In the immediate vicinity, on the other side of plac Kościuszki, the Centre of Ideas "Towards Democracy" - Veritas Campus operates, housed in a former Dominican nunnery, and nearby stands the Academic Church of Dominican Sisters of the Mother of God of Snow.
