Traces of Opoczno's medieval town walls from 1365 survive today in the cellars of houses on Kołomurna street.
The Defensive Wall is a remnant of the medieval fortifications of Opoczno, erected shortly after the city's foundation in 1365. Fragments of the wall can be seen today in the cellars of townhouses on Kołomurna Street, whose name directly refers to the former course of the fortifications.
The walls, with a perimeter of approximately 950 metres, were built from limestone on a plan roughly rectangular in shape, with at least two gates, the Łowicka and Dolna gates. They were most likely destroyed by the Swedish Deluge in 1655, and the remains were dismantled in the 19th century during the city's regulation.
Besides the name of Kołomurna Street, the former course of the walls is also recalled by the names of Garncarska and Szewska streets. Nearby stands the Kazimierzowski Castle, which the fortifications once protected together with the rest of the city.
