Kamienica Karola Kretschmera

6 Sierpnia 5, Łódź
About Kamienica Karola Kretschmera

A corner Eclectic-style tenement built for Karol Kretschmer in 1896, today home to the Przechowalnia art club in its cellars.

Kamienica Karola Kretschmera is a corner eclectic building on ulica 6 Sierpnia, built in the late 1880s and completed in 1896 according to a design by Franciszek Chełmiński. The elevation is decorated with chimaeras crowning the corner risalit, mascarons and lion heads. Kretschmer, owner of a woollen scarf mill operating since 1857, arranged a factory warehouse on the ground floor and designated the upper storeys as residential apartments.

After the war

After the Second World War the building was occupied by the Municipal Surveying Enterprise. Since 1995 an artist club called Przechowalnia has operated in the cellars. The building is entered in the register of immovable heritage of Łódź Voivodeship, with the entry dating from September 2020.

Earlier history of the site

The plot at this address belonged from 1829 to Florian Ruprecht, a weaver who had arrived from Bohemia. In 1869 Karol Kretschmer purchased the property, and in the early 1870s acquired the land as his own.
