A cinema operating since 2006 inside the Museum of Cinematography in the Scheibler palace, equipped with a digital projector and a vintage Ernemann projector for 35mm and 16mm film.
Kinematograf Cinema operates inside the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź, the only museum of its kind in Poland, housed in the historic Pałac Karola i Anny Scheiblerów [Scheibler Palace] at Zwycięstwa Square 1 in Widzew. It combines film screenings with an exhibition dedicated to the history of cinema.
The Museum of Cinematography was founded in 1986, so in 2026 it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The first public screenings at Kinematograf cinema took place on 6 October 2006, and since then the cinema has become a permanent part of the museum's programme.
The cinema is equipped with a digital 2K projector for contemporary films and a rare Ernemann projector, which allows screening of 35 and 16 millimetre film. Thanks to this, the programme includes not only new releases but also screenings of archived films in their original format.
The museum holds over 50 thousand artefacts related to the history of cinema and photography, including magic lanterns from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and a fotoplastikon from the workshop of inventor August Furmann. The main permanent exhibition, "Łódź Filmowa" [Cinematic Łódź], shows how the city transformed from an industrial centre in the 19th century to the post-war capital of Polish cinema. The second permanent exhibition, "Pałac pełen bajek" [Palace Full of Tales], tells the story of the building itself and its former residents.
From May to December 2026 a jubilee exhibition "40 treasures for the 40th anniversary of the Museum of Cinematography" is running, presenting artefacts selected by curators to mark the anniversary.
Besides screenings, the museum runs regular educational programmes aimed at both organised groups and individual visitors, related to the history of cinema and photography.
The building housing the museum and cinema is the former residence of the Scheibler family, one of the most important Łódź manufacturing families of the 19th century. The history of the palace is a separate thread of the visit, alongside exhibitions dedicated to film, so a visit combines the theme of cinema with the history of industrial Łódź and its former factory owners.
