General Stanisław Klicki's Neo-Gothic palace complex from 1822-1824 in Łowicz, now home to a contemporary painting gallery and a room devoted to his memory.
Klicki Palace stands in Łowicz on Pałacowa Street as part of a romantic palace complex built for General Stanisław Klicki. The Neo-Gothic building is surrounded by an English park, and together with the neighbouring Klicki Tower, a chapel and a keeper's lodge, it forms one of the more distinctive ensembles in this part of the city. Today the palace houses a painting gallery.
The complex was created in 1822-1824 on the initiative of General Stanisław Klicki. The project for the Neo-Gothic buildings was prepared by architect Karol Krauze. Some of the building material came from the demolition of the former primate's castle in Łowicz, so bas-reliefs with coats of arms and 16th-century insignia of the primates, salvaged from the earlier structure, were built into the palace walls.
The complex comprises a palace, a chapel, a defensive tower called a bastion, and a keeper's lodge, all maintained in the sentimental-romantic style. The whole is surrounded by an English park, laid out freely with winding paths and groups of trees characteristic of this 19th-century gardening fashion. Klicki Park borders directly on the palace and tower, forming together a coherent whole visible from the approach avenue.
Stanisław Klicki was a cavalryman and divisional general of the Kingdom of Poland. He participated in the defence of the Constitution of 3 May, in Napoleon's Moscow campaign and in the November Uprising. In Łowicz he commanded a headquarters, and in his palace he established a library and an armoury, gathering a book collection and military memorabilia connected with his own service.
The palace houses the Contemporary Painting Gallery of Zofia and Roman Artymowski, established in 1986. Zofia Artymowska, who lived from 1923 to 1999, and Roman Artymowski, who lived from 1919 to 1993, were graduates of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts. Zofia specialised in non-figurative compositions created in ceramic mosaic and monotype techniques, and their works form the core of the permanent exhibition. Similar museum character in Łowicz have the Museum in Łowicz and the Napoleon House.
Next to the gallery a memorial room for General Klicki has been arranged, where one can see a unique map of Europe from 1833. The exhibition thus combines two themes: the military history of the region from Klicki's time with post-war non-figurative painting, rarely encountered on this scale in smaller towns.
