Historic trams and buses, plus archives documenting over a century of Łódź public transport, including a model of the first Herbrand tram, are gathered in a museum on Wierzbowa street.
The Museum of Urban Communication in Łódź is an institution dedicated to the history of public transport in the city. It is located at ulica Wierzbowa 51 in Śródmieście [city centre] and holds a rich collection of historic trams, buses and archives documenting over 100 years of Łódź's urban transport.
The museum opened on 22 September 2006 on the initiative of Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne Łódź [Municipal Transport Company Łódź] together with the Club of Enthusiasts of Old Trams in Łódź. The institution continues the tradition of the Chamber of Traditions of the MPK, which has operated since 1977 and collected memorabilia from the history of Łódź transport. The officially established museum represents a natural evolution of this work, extending access to the collections to a wider public.
The museum's holdings include photographs documenting over a century of public transport in Łódź, heritage tickets, information boards and equipment from trams and buses of various eras. The exhibition presents models of the oldest and newest tram cars, offering a complete overview of the technical evolution of transport. Among the exhibits is a model of the first Łódź tram, the Herbrand, and one of the newest acquisitions, the modern Pesa tram. The collections also contain historic timetables and devices used for ticket inspection, representing the organisational aspects of urban transport operations.
The museum fulfils an important educational function, presenting the history of urban transport to both children and adult visitors. The presentation of the richness of the collections makes it possible to understand the role of public transport in the daily life of the city and its impact on Łódź's urban development. The institution organises temporary exhibitions and thematic meetings dedicated to enthusiasts of the history of technology.
The museum is located near the Teatr Nowy im. Kazimierza Dejmka, in one of Łódź's most active cultural centres. The proximity of the museum to other artistic institutions makes the area around ulica Wierzbowa worth visiting for longer, planning a day full of educational experiences.
