About Mariawicki Cemetery

A shared denominational section of two Mariavite parishes within the Doły cemetery complex, where the first burial took place in 1906.

Cmentarz Mariawicki at ul. Wojska Polskiego 151 is one of seven denominational sections of the large cemetery complex at Doły. It is used jointly by two parishes: the Old Catholic Church of the Mariaviites and the Catholic Church of the Mariaviites, two separate denominations that arose from the same religious movement.

A place within the Doły complex

The entire cemetery complex at Doły was established in 1896 according to a design by architect Ignacy Stebelski, as a response to overcrowding in older Łódź necropolises. It is divided into seven separate denominational sections: the Roman Catholic cemetery dedicated to St Vincent à Paulo, the municipal cemetery, the military cemetery dedicated to St George, the Orthodox cemetery dedicated to St Alexander Nevsky, the Baptist cemetery, the Pentecostal cemetery and the Mariaviite cemetery. The date of establishment of the entire complex refers to the layout as a whole, not to the Mariaviite section alone.

Origins of the Mariaviite section

The first burial at the Mariaviite cemetery took place on 18 December 1906. An eight-year-old girl, Aniela Graczyk, was buried at that time. The oldest preserved tombstones today date from the 1930s. From 1935 onwards, the cemetery grounds have also been used by the parish of the Catholic Church of the Mariaviites, the second separate Mariaviite denomination, which separated from the Old Catholic Church of the Mariaviites.

Who is buried here

About thirty Mariaviite nun sisters are buried in the cemetery. Among those interred are also clergy of this denomination, including Bishop Stanisław Maria Andrzej Jałosiński, Father Maria Fabian Jarzymowski and priestess Krystyna Maria Bogumiła Przyłucka.
