About Monument to Józef Piłsudski

The Monument to Józef Piłsudski in Aleksandrów Łódzki is a place where you can learn about Polish history at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Worth visiting if you are interested in monument architecture and Polish traditions of commemoration.

The Monument to Józef Piłsudski in Aleksandrów Łódzki stands on ulica Piłsudskiego, by the church of the Pentecost parish. It takes the form of a bronze bust of the marshal, mounted on a granite plinth. It was unveiled on 11 November 2002, on Independence Day.

Who erected it

The idea of commemorating the marshal in this location came from Hieronim Sikora, and the monument's creation was made possible by Rev. Canon Norbert Rucki and donors. The bust was made by K. Stasiak, and the design was prepared by seminarian Michał Gutowski. On the plinth is a dedication to the marshal and the inscription: "I love my Fatherland and the Church more than my own life".

Place of commemoration

The monument is a focal point for local patriotic ceremonies. On 11 November, after mass for the nation, parishioners lay flowers and light candles at its base, sing the national anthem and the "March of the First Brigade". On other days it is a quiet spot by the church, passed on the way to the town centre.

Nearby

A second memorial site in the town is the Monument to Rafał Bratoszewski, commemorating the founder of Aleksandrów.

From here you can continue your walk to the 200th Anniversary Park, where there is a place to sit.
