This statue of the Marshal by Robert Sobociński, installed in 2008 in front of the old town hall, sparked debate over the sabre being fastened on the wrong side of his belt.
On plac Piłsudskiego [Piłsudski Square] in the centre of Kutno, in front of the former town hall building, stands a monument to Marshal Józef Piłsudski. The sculpture was placed on a pedestal in October 2008 and was officially unveiled a month later, on the anniversary of Poland's independence.
The sculpture was created by Robert Sobociński. The monument was placed on its pedestal on 28 October 2008, with the official unveiling taking place on 11 November of that year. The ceremony was attended by, among others, historian and politician Tomasz Nałęcz.
After the unveiling, the monument sparked discussion: the depicted figure has a sabre attached to the right side of his belt, which would suggest the marshal was left-handed. Viewers and commentators considered this an artistic error, and the topic was later covered by local and national media, including radio and television.
The monument stands in front of the Town Hall in Kutno building, which now houses the city museum.
In the immediate vicinity stands Willa Troczewskiego, a former residence converted into the Civil Registry Office.
