About Monument to the 1863 Insurgents

This monument in the Wieluń forest, erected at the execution site in 1934 and rebuilt in 1958 after German destruction, commemorates January Uprising fighters executed during the 1863-1864 pacification.

The Monument to the 1863 Insurgents commemorates residents of Wieluń, Praszka and Złoczew who died during the Warsaw Uprising in 1863–1864. The monument is a symbol of remembrance for victims of repression who were executed in the Wieluń forest during the suppression of the uprising. It is one of the important sites of memory in Wieluń, linked to the history of the uprising and the struggle for Polish independence in the 19th century.

History of the monument and its symbolism

The monument was erected in 1934 in the Wieluń forest, directly at the site of the insurgents' execution. The sculpture features the Cross of Virtuti Militari and the names of those executed, forming a lasting memorial to them. The original dedication inscription is dated 1925 and was placed by the Wieluń city administration. The monument is a testament to the suffering of residents of Wieluń, Praszka and Złoczew, and forms an integral part of the historical identity of the region and Łódzkie Voivodeship.

Destruction and reconstruction after the Second World War

During the Second World War, the monument was destroyed by Germans in 1940 as part of their policy of destroying monuments and patriotic symbols. After the war, in 1958, the monument was reconstructed on the basis of a preserved model and through the engagement of Wieluń residents. The reconstruction was financed by contributions from the local community, reflecting deep attachment to the memory of the fallen. This rebuilding of the monument was also an act of cultivating collective memory and national identity.

Archaeological discoveries and anniversary commemorations

During archaeological work carried out at the monument site, the remains of eight victims of execution were found. This discovery confirmed historical records regarding the number of victims and established the location as a historically significant execution site. The insurgents came from Wieluń, Praszka and Złoczew, but among the victims were also deserters from the Russian army (Russians and Ukrainians). Each year, on 22 January, the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, ceremonies are held in memory of those executed. The commemorations are attended by local authorities, veterans and city residents, making the monument a living place of collective memory.
