This 1956 obelisk on plac Kościuszki commemorates victims of the German transit camp that operated in the town from 1940 to 1945, through which around 42,000 prisoners passed.
On plac Kościuszki in Konstantynów Łódzki, near the City Hall, stands an obelisk dedicated to heroes and victims of the Second World War. The monument was unveiled in 1956 and has since been one of the main points of remembrance in the city. Nearby, on the same square, there is a newer monument to the memory of murdered residents of Konstantynów Łódzki, which commemorates specifically the victims of the German transit camp that operated here in 1940-1945.
The monument takes the form of an obelisk and stands in the north-western part of plac Kościuszki, in close proximity to the City Hall of Konstantynów Łódzki. The area around it has been developed: there are modern fountains, greenery and benches, so the place also serves as a square in the city centre.
The obelisk is dedicated to heroes of the Second World War, including victims of the German transit camp, which operated in Konstantynów Łódzki from 1940 to 1945. Around 42,000 prisoners passed through the camp, of whom approximately one thousand died. The monument has for decades reminded residents and visitors to the city of this history. Students from Konstantynów mention it among local places of remembrance worth visiting while learning about the history of their own area.
The monument was unveiled in 1956, more than a decade after the end of the war. It therefore stands longest among the places of remembrance on plac Kościuszki, older than the nearby monument dedicated specifically to victims of the transit camp, which was created only in the 21st century.
