Multikino

The cinema at aleja Piłsudskiego 5 in Łódź continues to operate and receive audiences, but is no longer called Silver Screen. The multiplex opened in 2001 under that brand changed its name to Multikino in 2018 and operates under that name to this day, part of a network belonging to the Vue group. The double name, still found in some listings, is a remnant of that change.

From Silver Screen to Multikino

The cinema opened on 19 January 2001 as Silver Screen. In 2008 the network was taken over by Grupa ITI and merged with Multikino, with most venues changing their name in early 2010. The Łódź location proved to be the last stronghold of the old brand: it kept it for several more years and only the 2018 refurbishment ended the presence of the Silver Screen name in Poland, after eighteen years.

Screens and building

The multiplex has ten air-conditioned screens spread across two levels. Originally they held 1841 seats; after the 2018 renovation the number of seats is 1074, as the old rows were replaced with a more comfortable seating arrangement. The cinema occupies part of Łódź Business Center, a hotel-office-entertainment complex on the southern side of aleja Piłsudskiego, between ulica Piotrkowska and Sienkiewicza.

What to find here

This is the third largest cinema in Łódź, showing primarily new releases, with preview screenings and school showings. Those looking for art house cinema, retrospectives and films outside the mainstream circuit should head to Charlie instead.

The location is the greatest asset here: the entrance is on the W-Z route, a few steps from the intersection with Piotrkowska and from the tram interchange, so a screening is easy to add to a walk around the city centre or to dinner in the area. On Piotrkowska itself runs the Aleja Gwiazd with over ninety stars of actors, directors, cinematographers and film composers.

The historical background of Łódź's film tradition is shown by the Muzeum Kinematografii, Poland's only cinema museum, located a few tram stops away.
