About Museum of Wieluń Land

A regional museum in a former Bernardine convent, with displays on the region's prehistory, rural life around Wieluń and the city's bombing in September 1939.

The Museum of Wieluń Land is located at ulica Narutowicza 13 in Wieluń, in a former Bernardine convent complex from the early 17th century, built with funds from Anna ze Sroczyńskich Koniecpolska. The institution presents archaeology, ethnography, history and art connected with the region.

Convent converted into a museum

The building was erected as a Bernardine convent complex in the early 17th century. In the 1960s, archaeological research was conducted within it, after which the building was renovated with a museum function in mind. Today, the convent interiors house the institution's exhibition halls.

Permanent exhibitions

The museum presents three main permanent exhibitions. The first is devoted to the prehistory of Wieluń Land, the second shows everyday life in Wieluń villages at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the third, titled The Tragedy of Wieluń, concerns the bombing of the city on 1 September 1939. The collections include archaeological, ethnographic, historical and artistic artefacts connected with the region.

Branch in Ożarów

The museum operates a branch in Ożarów, where the Museum of Manor House Interiors is housed in a wooden manor house. The exhibition displays furnishings and décor typical of a gentry manor in the Wieluń region, in contrast to the main headquarters, which occupies former convent interiors in central Wieluń. Visiting both locations provides two different images of the region: urban in Wieluń and gentry in Ożarów.

Collections and character of the institution

The museum's collections include archaeological finds, ethnographic objects, historical materials and works of art connected with the Wieluń region. The exhibition The Tragedy of Wieluń refers to one of the most dramatic episodes in the city's history, when on 1 September 1939 Wieluń became the target of one of the first air raids of the Second World War. The ethnographic exhibition, in turn, documents everyday life in Wieluń villages at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, showing tools, clothing and farm equipment from that period.

Management

The institution is under the authority of the City Office of Wieluń. The position of director is held by Jan Książek.
