About Opoczno Railway Station

A historic railway station in Opoczno exemplifying architecture from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The building retains characteristic features of railway architecture from that period and serves as an important landmark in the city.

Opoczno Railway Station handles regional and inter-regional connections, linking the city with Łódź, Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań and other important centres across the country. Two railway stations operate in Opoczno: Opoczno Centralne on line 25 and Opoczno Południowe on the Centralna Magistrala Kolei, opened in 2014. The city's location on the border between the Łódzkie and Świętokrzyskie voivodeships gives it significance as a transfer point between regions.

History of railways in Opoczno

The railway reached Opoczno in the period 1885–1890, when a railway line was built connecting the city to the railway transport network. This infrastructure project significantly influenced the city's economic and transport development, enabling the transport of goods and passengers to nearby major centres. Line 25, on which the Central Station is located, provides a historic connection with Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Łódź Kaliski, Końskie and Skarżysko-Kamienna.

Stations and their operators

Opoczno Centralne Station, located in the city centre on ulica Dworcowa, is operated by ŁKA – Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna, which manages regional connections in the Łódź metropolitan area. Opoczno Południowe Station, located outside the city on the Centralna Magistrala Kolei line, is operated by PKP Intercity and Polregio. PKP Intercity offers inter-regional connections in InterCity and TLK classes to Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Gdynia and Katowice, as well as international connections to Prague and Budapest.

Significance for the region

Opoczno constitutes an important railway transport hub between Łódź, Kielce and Silesia. For both passengers commuting daily to work in larger cities and for tourists travelling around the country, the station serves as a gateway to the city and region. Opoczno city centre, located near the Central Station, houses shops, restaurants and other services, making the station a natural starting point for exploring the city. Opoczno's historic role as a centre of trade and crafts is still reflected in the station's function as a link for passenger and economic movement between ports. The Central Station, located directly on ulica Dworcowa, has remained the city's main connection with the outside world for decades. The Southern Station, opened in 2014 on the Centralna Magistrala Kolei, is situated outside the city but forms part of a modern railway transport system aimed at modernising Poland's transport infrastructure.
