An area in Opoczno lies within the former Jewish ghetto, established in 1940 and liquidated in 1942.
The area on ulica Kazimierza Wielkiego in Opoczno lies within the bounds of the former Jewish ghetto, established by German occupation authorities in November 1940. The ghetto also encompassed the streets of Berka Joselewicza, Błotna, Piłsudskiego and Szpitalna, totalling approximately 115 buildings.
At its peak, the ghetto was home to around 3,900 people, including those resettled from neighbouring towns. On 27 October 1942, residents were transported in freight wagons to the death camp at Treblinka, and the ghetto was liquidated between late 1942 and early 1943.
In 2012, a monument was unveiled in Opoczno to commemorate the deportation of the ghetto's residents, and anniversary ceremonies are held annually at several locations throughout the city, including at the former synagogue.
