About Pegasus

A six-metre sculpture of a winged horse by the Municipal Cultural Centre in Opoczno, created by Jerzy Sikorski in 1982 and one of the town's symbols.

At the building of Miejski Dom Kultury [Municipal Culture Centre] in Opoczno stands a monumental open-air sculpture depicting a winged horse, Pegasus. This work by sculptor Jerzy Sikorski, completed in 1982, is today one of the most recognisable symbols of the city.

Creation of the sculpture

Work on Pegasus took three years and was completed in 1982. Jerzy Sikorski, in designing the movement and form of the animal, observed a real mare named Natia, which gave the sculpture a realistic, dynamic form.

Size and construction

The sculpture measures 6 metres in height and 9.5 metres in length. It depicts a horse in motion, with a raised front leg and flowing mane, and its wings are spread as if about to take flight. The construction is based on a steel frame covered with reinforced concrete, while the wings are made of stainless steel. The frame was built separately in another location in Opoczno, and was then installed in its present location and set in concrete.

Scale of the work

Due to its size, Pegasus is mentioned among the largest sculptures of this type in Europe.

Renovation

From June to December 2021, Jerzy Sikorski carried out a thorough renovation of his work. The work included the installation of new steel elements supporting the structure beneath the figure and replacement of the wings.

Symbol of the city

Pegasus is one of the most recognisable symbols of Opoczno, and its name has been given to local organisations and businesses. The sculpture stands near other points in the city centre, including the Market Square in Opoczno, Kazimierz Castle which houses the Regional Museum in Opoczno, and the Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle.
