About Sculpture of Little Penguin Pik-Pok

This sculpture of Pik-Pok the penguin, hero of a late-1980s and early-1990s animated series based on a book by Adam Bahdaj, stands outside the Fala aquapark, echoing a scene of him riding a wave.

The sculpture of little penguin Pik-Pok stands before the entrance to Aquapark Fala on al. Unii Lubelskiej in Polesie district, Łódź. It depicts the hero of an animated series from the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, a penguin riding a wave, which explains well its location by the swimming pool.

Who is Pik-Pok

Pik-Pok is a little penguin from the Island of Eternal Blizzards, the protagonist of an animated film made in 1989–1992. The story was based on a book by Adam Bahdaj and tells of a penguin dreaming of travelling the world, despite his home island lying far from warmer lands.

Creation of the sculpture

The film was made by Łódź Studio Małych Form Filmowych [Studio of Small Film Forms], which is why Pik-Pok's character was added to the list of heroes commemorated in the city alongside other characters from local animation. The sculpture was unveiled on 23 September 2010, and its location by Aquapark Fala was chosen deliberately: it refers directly to the scene in which the penguin rides a wave, so the proximity of the swimming pool and water slide fits well with the film's plot.

Where Pik-Pok came from

The Island of Eternal Blizzards, the penguin's home, is a fictional, frozen place far from warmer lands. The dream of travelling the world that drives the film's plot explains why the character is associated with movement and water, alongside ice and snow. The film, created on the basis of Adam Bahdaj's book, has received a lasting memorial in Łódź in the form of a small monument, as have several other fairy tale characters from local animation studios.

The Trail of Fairy Tale Łódź

Pik-Pok is one of ten characters that make up the Trail of Fairy Tale Łódź, a collection of small monuments to heroes of animated films made in Łódź. The trail extends across different parts of the city, from Polesie to the city centre, and allows you to trace the output of Łódź animation studios while taking an ordinary walk. Among the trail's stops is also a sculpture of the heroes of the film Enchanted Pencil on ulica Traugutta, located in the city centre, a few stops further from Aquapark Fala.
