Plastuś Monument

The Plastuś Monument stands in the park named after Henryk Sienkiewicz in Łódź, just beside Primary School No. 173 and a children's playground. The sculpture, approximately one metre in height, depicts Plastuś, a literary and film character, holding a school bell in his hands. It is the fifth monument on the tourist trail "Łódź Bajkowa" (Łódź Fairytale), which brings together miniature monuments of characters from Polish fairy tales produced in Łódź film studios.

Character from book and series

Plastuś comes from the book "Plastusiowy pamiętnik" (Plastuś's Diary) by Maria Kownacka, published in 1936. The Polish writer specialising in children's literature (1894-1982) is remembered with warmth as an author of stories full of humour and warmth for the reading child. The book was adapted for the screen in 1980 as a children's series by the Łódź Studio of Short Film Forms Se-Ma-For, which became famous for producing fairy tales and animations for children.

Unveiling and creators of the monument

The sculpture was unveiled on 10 October 2012. The design of the Plastuś character was created by Adam Kilian, and the sculpture itself was realised by Marcin Mielczarek. The location of the monument in Sienkiewicz Park, in the vicinity of a school and children's playground, directly references the school setting in Kownacka's story.

The Łódź Fairytale Trail

The "Łódź Bajkowa" trail is a city initiative growing out of the heritage of the Łódź film studios Se-Ma-For. Miniature monuments of characters from Polish fairy tales and stories are positioned along the trail. The Plastuś Monument occupies the fifth place in this collection, underscoring the importance of this character in Polish children's culture. A walk along the trail naturally combines with discovering the history of Łódź as a city that gave the world many Polish animations.
