Plastuś Monument

The Plastuś Monument stands in Park im. Henryka Sienkiewicza in Łódź, just by Szkoła Podstawowa nr 173 [Primary School no. 173] and a playground. The sculpture, approximately one metre high, depicts Plastuś—a literary and film character—holding a school bell in his hands. This is the fifth monument on the "Łódź Bajkowa" [Fairytale Łódź] tourist trail, which gathers miniature monuments to characters from Polish fairy tales produced in Łódź film studios.

Character from book and television series

Plastuś comes from the book "Plastusiowy pamiętnik" [Plastuś's Diary] by Maria Kownacka, published in 1936. The Polish writer specialising in children's literature (1894–1982) is fondly remembered as the author of stories full of humour and warmth for the reading child. The book was adapted for film in 1980 as a children's television series by the Łódź Studio Małych Form Filmowych Se-Ma-For [Studio of Small Film Forms], which became famous for producing fairy tales and animation for children.

Unveiling and the monument's creators

The sculpture was unveiled on 10 October 2012. The design of the Plastuś character was created by Adam Kilian, and the sculpture itself was realised by Marcin Mielczarek. The location of the monument in Sienkiewicz Park, in the vicinity of the school and playground, directly references the school setting in Kownacka's story.

The Łódź Bajkowa trail

The "Łódź Bajkowa" trail is a city initiative emerging from the heritage of the Łódź film studios Se-Ma-For. Miniature monuments to characters from Polish fairy tales and stories are positioned along the trail. The Plastuś Monument occupies fifth place in this collection, which underscores the importance of this character in Polish children's culture. A walk along the trail naturally combines with learning about the history of Łódź as a city that has given the world many Polish animations.
