A Baroque gateway from the mid-17th century on Łowicz's Stary Rynek, a decorative entrance to the former primate's residence, relocated to its current spot in 1941.
Prymasowska Gate stands at Stary Rynek in Łowicz, next to the city's residential and cathedral complex. It is a Baroque structure that today serves as a decorative entrance to the former residence of bishops, adjacent to the Basilica Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Nicholas and the residence of the bishop of Łowicz.
The gate was built in the mid-17th century as part of the residential complex of the primates. Its design is cautiously attributed to Tomasz Poncino, an architect working at that time on commission for church dignitaries in Łowicz, though authorship is not certain.
In 1941 the gate was moved to its present location. The change of location was connected with transformations made to the buildings of Stary Rynek during the occupation, and the structure retained its Baroque character in the process.
The gate stands in close proximity to the town hall in Łowicz, surrounded by townhouses and church buildings that together form the historic centre of the city. The view of the gate and adjacent buildings is among the most frequently photographed parts of Stary Rynek.
