Sieradz's oldest brick tenement holds archaeological, ethnographic and historical collections of the region, and the institution also runs two branches outside the town.
The Regional Museum in Sieradz is housed in the oldest brick building in the city, at ulica Dominikańska 2. It holds archaeological, ethnographic, historical and artistic collections related to the Sieradz region, and beyond its main headquarters operates two branches outside the city.
The museum has its roots in an appeal to Sieradz residents on 1 February 1937, when two commissions jointly announced the need to establish the Museum of the Sieradz Region. The museum's board was elected and its statute approved on 23 November of the same year. The first curator was Rudolf Weinert, an amateur archaeologist who conducted excavations in the county between 1937 and 1944 and compiled the first monograph of its prehistory. Since 1947 the institution has operated in the building at Dominikańska, a townhouse dated to the late 16th or early 17th century, the oldest brick building in the city.
The collections cover palaeontology, archaeology, history, art history and ethnography of the region. Among the exhibitions is also military communications equipment from 1948-1988, illustrating post-war army equipment.
The museum operates two branches. The first is the Sieradz Ethnographic Park, the second is the Walewskis' Museum in Tubądzin, established on 25 October 1984 and housed in an eighteenth-century manor house.
The institution runs museum lessons, workshops and lectures for schools, and in its audiovisual pavilion organises chamber music concerts. In summer children's classes and folk events take place, part of Sieradz's cultural calendar.
The museum is open on Tuesday from 10:00 to 18:00, with free admission on Tuesdays. From Wednesday to Friday it is open from 9:00 to 16:00, and on Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00. On Monday and Saturday the museum is closed, as it is on public and religious holidays. The visiting season runs from 2 January to 20 December.
