Roman Catholic Cemetery of Saint Anne

The Catholic cemetery dedicated to Saint Anne on Lodowa Street 78 in Zarzew is part of a larger cemetery complex in this district, where two separate cemeteries sit alongside each other: Catholic and municipal. It has its own fence and administration, is active and maintained by the Łódź archdiocese.

Foundation of the cemetery

The Catholic cemetery dedicated to Saint Anne in Zarzew was established in 1898. A chapel, built in 1907, stands on its grounds.

Parish of Saint Anne

The parish of Saint Anne was established on 29 December 1909 at the behest of Archbishop Wincenty Teofil Popiel-Chościak. The cornerstone for the parish church was consecrated earlier, on 24 May 1904, and construction was completed in 1905, when the church was consecrated on 10 December. The parish church stands in a different location from the cemetery, on Rydza-Śmigłego Avenue in Widzew: it is a single-nave Romanesque Revival building with a five-sided presbytery, with a floor area of 640 square metres, and a tower 26 metres high, covered with copper sheeting.

Zarzew as part of Łódź

Zarzew was incorporated into Łódź in two stages: part of the settlement was included on 18 August 1915, and the remainder only on 13 February 1946. The cemetery dedicated to Saint Anne was therefore established when Zarzew was still a separate settlement outside Łódź.

Adjacent to the municipal cemetery

The Catholic cemetery lies on shared grounds with the municipal cemetery Zarzew, bounded by Przybyszewskiego, Puszkina, Jadzi Andrzejewskiej and Lodowa Streets. Both cemeteries have separate fences and separate administration, however – they are two distinct facilities, connected only by a passage at the end of the main avenue.
