About Saint Matthew Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery

The Saint Matthew Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery on Sopocka Street is a burial place with a rich history, where members of Łódź's Protestant community rest. Walking among the graves, one can discover historic tombstones and learn about the city's history from the perspective of its religious minority.

The Saint Matthew Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery on Sopocka Street is a Protestant necropolis in the Ruda district, established in 1924 for the evangelical parish then active in Ruda Pabianicka. It is a separate burial site, unrelated to the denominational cemeteries on Ogrodowa Street in the city centre.

History of establishment

The cemetery was created in 1924 with the local evangelical community in mind. In 1986, remains from the defunct Evangelical-Augsburg cemetery on Felsztyńskiego Street, known as Wysner Cemetery, were transferred to its grounds, together with old tombstones from that location.

Management and administration

The cemetery is cared for by the Saint Matthew Evangelical-Augsburg Parish in Łódź, whose office is located at Piotrkowska Street 279/283 and is open on Fridays from 9:00 to 15:00. Since 2020, the day-to-day administration of the site has been managed by the Klepsydra company from Łódź, acting on behalf of the parish.

Protected status

The site is entered in Łódź's municipal register of monuments, which confirms the historical value of the tombstones, including those transferred from the former cemetery on Felsztyńskiego Street.
