A piece of street furniture outside the Urząd Miejski on plac Kościuszki, telling time by the gnomon's shadow; today it mainly serves a decorative role.
A sundial is a small architectural feature located in plac Kościuszki in Konstantynów Łódzki, in front of the town hall building.
A sundial indicates the time based on the position of the shadow cast by a gnomon, a pointer set at an angle corresponding to the geographical latitude of the location. The reading is approximate and depends on sunlight, so today the device serves mainly a decorative and commemorative function.
The sundial stands beside a fountain and other features of the square, together creating a place for walks in the city centre, right next to the town authorities' headquarters. Plac Kościuszki, where the sundial stands, is an extensive area comprising several squares and the central point of Konstantynów Łódzki.
Sundials were among the first timekeeping instruments and, although they do not replace watches today, in public spaces they serve as decorative references to the history of timekeeping.
