An art-house screening room in the Łódź House of Culture, operating for over fifty years and bearing its current name since 2013, showing European cinema.
Kino Szpulka operates on the ground floor of the Łódzki Dom Kultury at Traugutta 18 in Śródmieście, in room 105. It is a studio screening room that has operated at ŁDK for over fifty years and specialises in ambitious art films and quality European cinema outside the mainstream multiplex circuit.
The room was renamed Szpulka on 22 November 2013, following a rebranding and digitalisation process that increased its technical capabilities. The name refers to the traditional film spool on which film reels were wound. The cinema is part of the Network of Studio and Local Cinemas and the Network of Digital Cinemas, organisations that support cinemas showing a more ambitious repertoire than average box office fare.
Szpulka focuses on an intimate atmosphere and carefully curated programming, deliberately avoiding the popcorn smell typical of multiplexes. Alongside Szpulka in the ŁDK building was another cinema, Kino Przytulne, and the programme of both venues complemented the institution's cultural offering.
Łódzki Dom Kultury is a provincial institution operating since 1953, housed in a six-storey building with an area of approximately 7000 square metres in central Łódź. In addition to the cinema, the building houses a permanent FF gallery and interdisciplinary galleries, and the institution organises a festival of alternative and experimental theatres called "Łódzkie Spotkania Teatralne" [Łódź Theatre Meetings]. This makes it easy to combine a cinema visit with an exhibition or theatrical event in the same building.
A few hundred metres away stands the Centralne Muzeum Włókiennictwa, one of the more important museums of Łódź's industrial history.
Not far away is also the Stary Rynek, a good starting point for a walk before the screening.
In Śródmieście there is another studio cinema with a similar profile, Kino Tatry on Sienkiewicza, Poland's oldest. Kino BODO on Rewolucji 1905 r. no longer operates, having closed permanently at the end of 2022.
