A Neo-Renaissance tenement at Piotrkowska 153 from 1892, behind which the owner's son built an eclectic villa in 1923-1925 - now home to a Łódź-Śródmieście residents' service centre.
The tenement at ulica Piotrkowska 153 in Łódź is a two-storey apartment building in neo-Renaissance style, erected for industrialist Florian Jarisch. At the rear of the property, adjoining the tenement with its rear wings, stands a villa built by his son.
The plot under the current number 153 was taken over in 1834 by weaver Antoni Lorentz, who had arrived from Bohemia. The construction he had begun was completed by the next owner, Jan Kasper. The property later changed hands - it belonged to the Kasper, Riess and Herman families - until the mid-1870s when it passed into the hands of Florian Jarisch, who soon purchased the land outright.
The two-storey front tenement was built according to a design from 1892, created by architect Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger. This is also confirmed in his biography, where under the year 1893 is listed a neo-Renaissance tenement he designed at number 153 on ulica Piotrkowska.
Florian's son, Alfred Jarisch, built a villa in the courtyard depths - the new building was erected in 1923-1925 at the rear of the front tenement, adjoining it with its rear wings and creating a small internal courtyard. Between the villa and today's aleja Kościuszki extended a garden. The villa was designed by Viennese architect Karl Seidl in eclectic style, and its founders were Florian Jarisch's sons, Alfred and Bodo. Villa of Alfred Jarisch is entered in the heritage register under numbers A/75 and B/30, based on decisions from 10 December 1970 and 20 January 1971. It formerly housed a registry office wedding hall, and today is home to the Resident Service Centre Łódź-Śródmieście, operated by Łódź City Council.
The Jarisch family occupied the entire property, stretching from Piotrkowska to today's aleja Kościuszki, until the outbreak of the Second World War. Before the war, the front tenement housed a weaving mill for cotton and linen goods belonging to F. Jarisch, as well as among others the technical department of Provodnik, a company dealing in rubber products, an electrotechnical supply store of F. Kołaczkowski, and a store of woollen, cotton and silk materials run by Eugeniusz Woskowicz.
Next door, at number 152, stands the tenement of Ryszard Bechtold, and at number 151 the palace of Gustaw Adolf Kindermann.
