An eclectic tenement at Piotrkowska 101 from 1880, which between the wars housed the editorial office of the Głos Poranny daily and the well-regarded Olga Sanne glass and china shop.
The J. Hofman Tenement House stands at Piotrkowska 101, in central Łódź, several dozen metres from Salomon Bahariera's Tenement House. A two-storey, eclectic facade conceals the history of one of those Łódź properties that began as a building plot bought and sold by successive manufacturer families, and ended as a representative apartment building on the city's main street.
The plot at present-day Piotrkowska 101, numbered 759 in the old mortgage registry, was acquired in 1834 by Krystian Tchyse. Ownership changed hands several times thereafter: Karol Hille, Józef Piltz, from 1842 Krystian Fryderyk Neumann, and from 1862 his son-in-law Gottlob Karol Gnauk. The original plot had stretched all the way to Wólczańska Street; in 1863, during the regulation of Andrzeja Street, it was cut, with part of it taken for new building plots, and the owner received a morga of land in another part of the city in exchange. In 1865 the property was taken over by Karol Bauch, and from 1868 it belonged to Wilhelm Kern.
At the end of the 1870s, Kern sold the property to Jakub Hoffmann, also recorded as Hofman. He erected the front tenement building according to a design from 1880, and ran a scarf and cord weaving mill in the courtyard. The architect of the front building was Edward Creutzburg, a name also recorded as Kreuzburg. The building represents the eclectic style.
The third and fourth storeys of the front tenement were added in the interwar period, as mentioned in the Łódź Bulletin of Notices from 1936. The property owner at that time was Frojm Bornsztajn, also recorded as Bornstein. At Piotrkowska 101 there operated at that time the glass and porcelain shop "Olga Sanne", which was highly regarded in Łódź and run by Olga Baum. The editorial office of the newspaper "Głos Poranny", published in the years 1929-39, was also located there.
The tenement house is listed in the heritage register under number A/335/1-4, registered on 7 June 1993. In the courtyard of the tenement, printing works and a bookbindery operated in 1924. In 2013, a sculpture titled "Dupa Tuwima" by the B.I.E.D.A. group was installed there, and in 2017 it was moved to the adjacent property. Tuwim himself, with whom Łódź's Piotrkowska is associated with many locations, has his Tuwim Bench on the other side of the pedestrianised street.
