This bronze figure of an electrician on a ladder leaning against a lamppost was unveiled in 2007 on Piotrkowska 37, marking the centenary of Łódź's first power plant.
At Piotrkowska 37, next to Kamienica Dawida Szmulewicza, stands a bronze figure of a man on a ladder, leant against a stylised street lamp. It is one of the monuments in the Gallery of Great Łódź Citizens.
The sculpture depicts an anonymous electrician-lamplighter at life size, holding a light bulb in his right hand and standing on a ladder leant against a lamp post. Next to him lies a bag, which serves as a bench for passers-by.
The monument was designed by Marcel Szytenchelm and was unveiled on 21 September 2007 to mark the centenary of the opening of the first power station in Łódź. It was financed by Dalkia Łódź SA and Łódzki Zakład Energetyczny.
In May 1906, the first electric lighting in a Łódź shop came on at the „American Diamant Palace” store that opened at this address - the power was at first supplied on a makeshift basis from the Grand Hotel. The power station on the former Targowa Street began generating electricity in September 1907. The monument refers to this event and is part of the Gallery of Great Łódź Citizens, a series of outdoor sculptures along Piotrkowska, created since 1999.
The building next to which the monument stands was erected in 1904 for Dawid Szmulewicz according to a design by architect Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger from 1903, in Art Nouveau forms.
