Podkurnędz is associated above all with Wapienniki (Limekilns): a former quarry now flooded with water, known for its turquoise-coloured lake, though today closed to visitors.
Wapienniki is what remains of a limestone quarry in Sulejów, which operated until the end of 2002. When the pumps draining groundwater were switched off, the bottom began to flood on its own, forming a lake of almost 14 hectares and up to about 14 metres deep. The water's distinctive azure colour comes from calcium carbonate leached from the limestone rock. Since 2020, however, the area has been closed due to littering and vandalism, so this description serves to explain the place's history, not as an invitation to visit without permission.
Wapienniki actually lies within the area of Sulejów, where you'll also find other, accessible attractions in the region, including places from the parks and natural areas list and nature in the Łódź region.
