an asymmetric 2012 flyover over the S14 by Maciej Fidyk, closed to pedestrians since 2026
Szynkielew near Pabianice is in practice a single point on the attractions map: the asymmetrical "Błędnik" viaduct over the S14 motorway. This isn't a spot for a whole trip, more a short stop for anyone passing through the area who likes unusual architecture.
The structure from 2012, designed by Maciej Fidyk, stands out for having no symmetrical element at all: the cable supports run at different angles, the deck is arch-shaped and curves on its own, and even the piers are asymmetrical. The viaduct is 80 metres long and painted in three colours, which makes an impression even from the roadside in good light. The name was chosen in a competition organised by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Today the structure is closed to pedestrian traffic after damage to it, so it can only be viewed from the outside, best from the side of the local road.
It's a kind of atmospheric place and at the same time a listed technical monument, so if you're after similarly unusual structures in the region, it's worth browsing both categories.
