Rafał Sachs House

Located within: Ulica Piotrkowska Piotrkowska 44, Łódź
About Rafał Sachs House

An eclectic tenement at Piotrkowska 44 from the 1860s, named after merchant Rafał Sachs, whose family firm made paints, glues and Jupiter-brand matches.

Rafał Sachs House stands at Piotrkowska 44, opposite Józefa Czapiewskiego Tenement and next to Oszera Kohna Tenement. The building was erected in the second half of the 1860s in eclectic style, combining classical and Renaissance elements.

Watchmaker and the Landau marriage

In February 1862, Józef Klenner sold the southern part of the property on the Piotrkowska side to the couple Rozalia and Pinkus Landau Gutenteger. Already in December of that year, the couple erected a brick, single-storey front building together with an identical outbuilding. In 1867, the front building housed L. Chmielewski's watchmaking workshop. Pinkus Landau Gutenteger was probably an uncle of the well-known Łódź architect Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger, author of the designs of many tenements on Piotrkowska.

Merchant from Kalisz

In January 1868, the Landau Gutenteger couple sold the property to Rafał Sachs, a guild merchant from Kalisz. The building took its name from his surname, under which it is known to this day. The tenement is registered in the heritage register under number A/43, registered on 20 January 1971, and in the municipal heritage inventory under number 962.

Paints, glues and matches

The Rafał Sachs family business was mainly engaged in chemicals. As early as the 1860s, it produced paints and glues in a mechanical paint factory in the western part of Łódź, and in the 1890s, in partnership with Moritz Piesch, opened the Jupiter matches factory. The property remained in the hands of the Sachs family until the middle of the first decade of the 20th century, when it was taken over by Handlowy Bank in Łódź and Łódzki Bank Kupiecki. From 1912, the next owner was the Joint-stock Company of Woollen Products of Juliusz Heinzl.
