A secular municipal cemetery in Zarzew from 1975, bordering the Catholic St Anne's cemetery, with a separate military section for veterans of the Polish-Soviet War.
Municipal Cemetery "Zarzew" is a secular, non-parish cemetery on Przybyszewskiego Street in Zarzew, in the Widzew district of Łódź. It borders directly on the Catholic Roman Catholic Cemetery dedicated to Saint Anna, but these are two separate facilities, each with its own fence and administration, connected only by a passage at the end of the main avenue.
The municipal cemetery was established in 1975, nearly eighty years after the neighbouring Catholic cemetery, which was founded in 1898. It was therefore created much later, in response to the needs of the city's growing secular population, when Zarzew was already fully part of Łódź. The settlement of Zarzew itself was incorporated into the city in two stages: 18 August 1915 and 13 February 1946.
The cemetery covers more than 11 hectares. The grounds are bounded by Przybyszewskiego, Puszkina, Jadzi Andrzejewskiej and Lodowa Streets, and the boundary with the Catholic section is marked by the passage at the end of the main avenue, with no physical separation by any building.
The cemetery contains a military section with graves of soldiers and veterans of the Polish-Soviet War. This is one of the few elements of this relatively young secular cemetery that connects it with the earlier history of the city and region.
The municipal section is managed by the Department of Urban Greenery in Łódź, the city authority responsible for maintaining municipal cemeteries; previously this function was performed by the Municipal Cemeteries Department in Łódź. This formally distinguishes it from the neighbouring parish section, which is run by the diocese.
