Julianów-Marysin-Rogi is a district of post-war and contemporary sacred architecture - most of the local churches were built after 1945, some only in the 1990s and the 21st century. Five churches in Julianów, Marysin and Rogi show how this part of Łódź rebuilt parish life after the war.
Construction interrupted by the war, finished by the Carmelites
The Church of the Protection of St. Joseph and Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Liściasta Street is a church whose construction was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1939 - it was finished by the Discalced Carmelites, and the church itself is considered the first in Łódź built after the Second Vatican Council, which is visible in its form and interior.
Two churches from the same post-war decade
The Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Skarbowa Street was built between 1949 and 1956, and its architecture references the Roman basilica of San Paolo. In exactly the same years, 1949-1956, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque on Zgierska Street was also being built, although the parish itself was established back in 1915, and the church was only consecrated in 1987.
Churches from recent decades - the 1990s and the 21st century
The Church of St. Vincent Pallotti on Łagiewnicka Street was built in under two years, between August 1989 and February 1991 - one of the fastest-built churches on this list. The youngest building is the Parish of St. Jude Thaddeus on Antoniego Książka Street, a modern three-nave church consecrated in 2008, dedicated to the patron saint of difficult and hopeless causes.
How to plan a walk around the district's churches?
The churches on Liściasta and Skarbowa streets lie closer to each other in the Julianów area, while the churches on Zgierska, Łagiewnicka and Antoniego Książka streets require a longer walk or a ride toward Marysin and Rogi.
