Cmentarze i pomniki: Stare Polesie

For families For couples Solo For rainy days Free
4 attractions

On Ogrodowa street in Stare Polesie lies one of the largest cemetery complexes in Łódź - three denominational necropolises founded in the mid-19th century, today recognised as a historic monument. This is a place for people looking for Łódź's funerary architecture, not another park for a walk with a child.

Three faiths in one place

Stary Cmentarz (Old Cemetery) is the shared name for three neighbouring necropolises on Ogrodowa and Srebrzyńska streets. The Catholic section is the Cmentarz Rzymskokatolicki pw. św. Józefa (Roman Catholic Cemetery of St Joseph), an eleven-hectare grounds with the neo-Renaissance mausoleum of the Heinzel family. Next to it is the Cmentarz Ewangelicko-Augsburski (Evangelical Augsburg Cemetery) with the graves of Łódź's factory owners and the neo-Gothic Scheibler Chapel, and the smallest is the Cmentarz Prawosławny (Orthodox Cemetery), with the Chapel of the Resurrection and inscriptions in Cyrillic.

Who this place is for

This is a stop for lovers of Łódź's industrial history and funerary architecture, not a typical family attraction. It's worth walking through all three sections in turn, since only together do they show how multi-faith the 19th-century town of factory owners was. Admission to all four sites is free.

Is admission to Stary Cmentarz paid? No, all parts of the necropolis are free to visit.

More places connected to the town's history can be found among the attractions in Łódź and in the discover Łódź section, and other necropolises of the region are gathered in the cemeteries and monuments category.
