In Stary Widzew, two institutions show completely different faces of Łódź: the city's industrial history in a former power plant, and bookbinding craft in a temporary venue after the closure of its main building. The Se-ma-for Animation Museum, which once operated in this area, was permanently closed in 2018 and has no plans to reopen, so it is left out of this description.
What to see at EC1?
EC1 on Targowa 1/3, right by the Łódź Fabryczna train station, is a complex housed in a former municipal power plant, home today to a science centre with hands-on experiment stations, a planetarium, a museum of Polish cinema, and a comics centre. It is a proposal for a whole day, for families and adults alike, with a rooftop viewing terrace. The complex was built on the site of Łódź's first power plant, launched before the First World War and supplying the city until 2000, before undergoing a thorough revitalization and becoming a cultural institution.
Where can you now find the Museum of Artistic Bookmaking?
The Muzeum Książki Artystycznej (Museum of Artistic Bookmaking), since the closure of its main venue due to the building's poor technical condition, has been operating in two temporary locations in the centre of Łódź, including the ZENIT building on Sienkiewicza Street. It is worth checking the current exhibition address before your visit. The museum specializes in the art of the book, rare editions and printing techniques - it is one of the few places in the region where you can see the craft of bookbinding and artistic printing at work.
