Anyone looking for museums in Katedralna, Łódź lands in a district centred on the southern stretch of Piotrkowska street and Księży Młyn. Within a small area stand a former factory turned textile museum, a wooden open-air museum, a post-industrial art complex, and two small themed institutions, all close together.

What can you see at the Biała Fabryka Geyera?

At Piotrkowska 282 you'll find the Centralne Muzeum Włókiennictwa (Central Museum of Textiles), housed in the Biała Fabryka Ludwika Geyera (Ludwik Geyer's White Factory) - a classicist quadrangle from 1835-1838, plastered in light colour, unlike most later Łódź factories built of red brick. It was here that Łódź's first steam engine started up in 1838. Today the museum shows exhibitions on textiles and fashion, and the building itself is one of the city's most recognisable industrial monuments.

Nine wooden houses in one park

At the same address, in the branch known as the Skansen Łódzkiej Architektury Drewnianej (Open-Air Museum of Łódź Wooden Architecture) (officially the Łódzki Park Kultury Miejskiej, Łódź Urban Culture Park, since 2020), stand nine historic buildings relocated from various parts of Łódź: from Wólczańska, Żeromskiego, Kopernika and Mazowiecka streets, joined by a summer villa from Ruda Pabianicka, a wooden tram pavilion from Zgierz, and the oldest church in the collection, brought from Nowosolna. According to the museum's price list, a combined ticket for the permanent exhibition and the open-air museum cost 15 PLN standard and 9 PLN reduced - it's worth checking current prices before your visit.

Fabryka Sztuki in Księży Młyn

Fabryka Sztuki (Art Factory) on Tymienieckiego street 3 is a revitalised 19th-century factory and residential complex once belonging to the Scheibler family, today a municipal cultural institution combining theatre, music and visual arts with Art Inkubator, a support programme for businesses in the creative sector. The institution has operated since 2007 across nearly seven thousand square metres of brick buildings.

Two small institutions: the archdiocese and education

The Muzeum Archidiecezji Łódzkiej (Museum of the Łódź Archdiocese) on ks. Skorupki street 13 has been gathering sacred art since 1937, and its collection has also been shown in Warsaw, Kraków and Bari in Italy - it's a small institution, so it's best to arrange a visit by phone in advance. The Muzeum Oświaty Ziemi Łódzkiej (Museum of Education of the Łódź Region) on Wólczańska street 202 is the oldest continuously operating institution of its kind in Poland and documents the history of schooling in the Łódź region - less well known than the White Factory, but one of the more interesting places documenting the history of education in the country.

When to visit Katedralna with an umbrella?

All five places are indoors, making this a good plan for a rainy day in Łódź. The White Factory and the open-air museum share the same address, so they're easy to combine - the rest of Łódź's museums lie in other parts of the city.
