Stary Widzew, despite being close to the centre, has three green spots with completely different histories: a greenhouse with tropical vegetation, a sports and recreation park on the site of a former forest, and one of Łódź's oldest municipal parks by the railway station.

Where can you see tropical plants without leaving the city?

The Palmiarnia of the Botanical Garden on Piłsudskiego avenue 61, in Źródliska Park, holds around four and a half thousand plants across three climate pavilions, and the collection dates back to the era of Łódź's mill owners, who kept similar specimens in their own winter gardens before the city took them under its care and moved them, in the 1920s, into the building in Źródliska Park.

Where can you go for a run or sit on the grass?

Park 3 Maja covers 23.5 hectares of the former Łódź Forest, with four football pitches of various surfaces, walking paths and a pond from 1928, home to water lilies. The whole park is listed on the heritage register, and two of its trees have the status of natural monuments. Closer to the railway station lies Stanislaw Moniuszko Park, founded in 1875 as a green space for travellers arriving by train - it is the second-oldest park in Łódź, right after Źródliska, designed by the architect Hilary Majewski.

More green spaces in the city and the region can be found on the parks and nature in the Łódź region page, and family attractions in the same area on the family attractions page.
