Stare Polesie is the district where Łódź invited stars of world street art -
the Spaniard BOA MISTURA, the Portuguese VHILS and the Chilean INTI painted murals here that
are still considered among the most important in the city. The murals of Stare Polesie
cluster mainly around aleja Politechniki, Kopernika and Legionów streets, so the route can be
walked in a few hours. This page groups them by street and shows the story behind
each one.
The largest murals of the Urban Forms festival
At Skłodowskiej-Curie 26 stands the mural
by the Spanish group BOA MISTURA from 2016 - over six hundred square metres with a quote
from a novel by Jerzy Kosiński, the first mural of its kind in Poland. At Kopernika 28 is the
mural by the Portuguese artist VHILS, who instead
of paint carves the image with a drill into the plaster, down to the brick - the woman's face on
Kopernika is the first mural of this kind in Poland. At Łąkowa 10 it is worth seeing the
mural by the Chinese artist DALeast from 2014
- a deer made of thousands of thin lines resembling branches, with birds hidden among them.
At 28 Pułku Strzelców Kaniowskich 48 the Chilean INTI
painted a traveller in traditional Andean dress.
Aleja Politechniki - two murals on one wall
At aleja Politechniki 16, two murals stand side by side: the mural by Etam Cru from 2013, an illustration of a poem by
Julian Tuwim, "In an Aeroplane", measuring sixteen by twelve metres, and "Still Life" by the Spaniard ARYZ from 2012,
done in the pastel colours characteristic of the artist.
Wólczańska and Więckowskiego - critical social commentary
At Wólczańska 109 you will find the mural "Time
Has Devoured Us" by LUMP from 2012 - a black-and-white collage in a communist-era
style, criticising advertising. At Wólczańska 44, on the wall of the former Lurkentski
factory, stands a hyper-detailed composition by GREGOR
from 2013. At Więckowskiego 9 is the mural
"After the Conversation" by the Russian Morik - a woman right after an important phone call.
Legionów and Żeligowskiego - references to the Museum of Art
At Legionów 49 and 51, on two tenement buildings, the mural
"Jonasz" was created in 2015, referencing a painting by Adam Muszko from the Museum of Art. At
Legionów 57 hangs "Gentryfikacja" ("Gentrification") by Robert
Proch, known as TONE, a multi-layered composition from 2013. At Żeligowskiego 58 is
"Kobieta Adlera" ("Adler's Woman") by
MEISAL461, referencing the work of the Jewish painter Jankiel Adler, and at
Żeromskiego 20 - another mural by
Aleksandra Adamczuk and Paulina Nawrot from 2015.
Pogonowskiego and Kopernika - three murals on one route
At Pogonowskiego 35 stands the mural by
MEISAL461 and OVCA from 2015, referencing a painting by Jerzy Krawczyk from the Museum of Art.
In the courtyard at Pogonowskiego 12 is "Madonna
Astronautów" ("Madonna of the Astronauts") by Egon Fietke, an interpretation of a painting by Kondek, and at
Pogonowskiego 25, on the wall of a school, hangs the mural
by the MASSMIX collective - a collage of ideas from children's workshops. At Kopernika 56, an
earlier mural by Egon Fietke
from 2010 decorates a historic former factory, one of his many works in the city.
A mural on the Łódź University of Technology campus
On the grounds of Campus B of the Łódź University of Technology is the
mural "Jestem PŁ" ("I Am PŁ"), from 2014,
attributed to Mateusz Magrowicz - worth keeping in mind when planning a route around the
university area, as it lies a little away from the main cluster of murals.
How to plan a mural walk in Stare Polesie
Most of the murals on this list lie within the triangle between aleja Politechniki, Wólczańska
and Legionów, so they can all be seen on a single walk of a few hours. All of them are
free to view, as they are on the external walls of buildings - the only
limitation is the weather and the time of day, since some compositions are better seen in daylight.
It is worth remembering that street murals are not eternal: two from the original Urban
Forms list in Stare Polesie no longer exist, so it is a good idea to check before a visit whether a given
location is still current. The route is best started around aleja Politechniki,
where two murals stand side by side on one wall, and finished around Żeligowskiego
and Żeromskiego, close to public transport stops.
